Gottfried John is a German film actor. He was born on August 29, 1942, in Berlin, Germany. He never met his father, who got married to another woman. John grew up in many protectories but left at the age of 15 to go back to his mother, who’s living in Paris at that time. From there, he has worked as a construction worker and pavement artist. He decided to go back to Berlin in 1960. During the early 60s, John started his career as an actor and has done un-credited roles in few films.
In 1971, he starred in Volker Vogeler in Jaider, der einsame Jager. From then, he appeared in several German films and TV films. During the 70’s until the early 80s, he was cast by German filmmaker, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, in many of his projects including the West German TV miniseries, Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980). John rose to fame for his performance as General Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov in Pierce Brosnan’s Golden Eye (1995), the 17th spy film in the James Bond series.
He also earned popularity for his portrayal as Julius Caesar in Claude Zidi’s 1999 feature film, Asterix & Obelix Take on Caesar.
