He was amongst the biggest popular modeling names in the late 1980s and 1990s. He has shown his presence in over hundreds of advertisements and commercials. He has been photographed by the top photographers of the world and has also worked for top brands and companies. In his high school’s last year, Richards achieved a scholarship through which he went to England to complete his further education in the sixth form of English independent primary school named Haileybury and Imperial Service College. Later on being an athlete scholar he went to the Princeton University and completed his graduation holding a degree of Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from there in the year 1985. In this era of his life, Richards was not having any plans for modeling as his focus was only on school and football.

His ambition for playing football came to an end due to a shoulder injury. He was advisedtold that he will not be able to not to play football after the major injuryit. Thus, Richards began his career as a male model and later on, he went on doing advertising campaigns and commercials. Later on in the 1990s, he went to take on his career to the next level and tried in movies. He moved from New York to Los Angeles the home to Hollywood where he began his acting career.

Apart from acting, Richards being a scriptwriter started his own production company named Tortoise Entertainment. His production company is involved in the production of television, documentaries and film projects. One of these projects includes a buddy comedy titled Dumbbells which was written and starred by Richards himself.
