Deadmau5, whose pronunciation is the dead mouse, and whose actual name is Joel Thomas Zimmerman, is a disk jockey, composer, and a record producer. He was born on January 5, 1981 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

His parents' names are Nancy and Rodney Thomas "Rod" Zimmerman. Nancy worked as a visual artist while Rodney was a plant worker at General Motors. Joel has one brother and one sister. On one of his birthday, he received a keyboard as a gift on Christmas, and since then he got hooked on to the music.

Once, he was working on the computer at his home when the machine shut down abruptly and a foul smell started to arise from it. When they opened it, Zimmerman found a dead mouse inside it, and since then his friends started calling him a dead mouse.

Zimmerman didn't mind the name and started using it professionally. Joel went to Westlane Secondary School, Niagara Falls. After graduating, he commenced to work as a programmer for a music licensing company. 

On July 26, 2005, he made his debut on the international circuit with an album named Get Scraped. A year later, a studio signed Zimmerman and they released his second project titled Vexillology. After two years, he established his record studio with the help of Ultra Records.

After its establishment, he has launched all his albums like For Lack of a Better Name for his home studio. He has collaborated with several artists, but his most successful collaboration has been with Kaskade. Many of his compositions have topped Dance/Mix Show Airplay, a chart of Billboard magazine. He was the house DJ of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

A video game named DJ Hero 2 and Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff, a mobile app, contains a character based on Zimmerman.

Fame has its flip side as well and Zimmerman suffered from depression and was about to quit his career. At times, he has also vomited and collapsed on stage. However, he recovered from it. However, their romance fizzled out within two months. Shortly after their breakup, they started dating each other once again. Zimmerman even proposed marriage to her. However, the couple eventually separated. In the mid-2017, he got hitched to Kelly Fedoni. He won the SOCAN's International Achievement Award on June 19, 2012.
