Born in the year 1985 on September the 30th, T- Pain initially went by the name Faheem Rashad Najam. He was born into a Muslim family of Tallahassee, in the state of Florida, United States of America. His stage name T-Pain is short for “Tallahassee Pain,” the name thus adopted by him as it highlighted the hardships he experienced while he was living in Tallahassee. Najam was born in a family where he was a middle child among his five siblings. Although born and raised a Muslim he does not believe to be tied to religion.
He believes in God and in a free will to follow what he wishes to. As a child, he learned a lot from his father who was an entrepreneur but was avidly involved in music. He often accompanied his dad to his dad’s studio and would thoroughly enjoy the music. At the age of 10, Najam converted his bedroom into a small mixing arena for music, which initially consisted of a beat machine, a keyboard and a four-track recorder.
Using the equipment at his disposal, little T-Pain would come up with his own musical compositions which eventually lead to the piling up of a huge collection of songs. Slowly and gradually he started singing. He mostly rapped as that is what everyone around him was doing. He is quoted saying, "The rapping was just something that I started doing because I thought it was cool." This routine continued until he landed a role in a five-piece rapping outfit called "Nappy Headz."
The group had a decent beginning in 2000, but the flame soon died out. After this, T-Pain started to focus on his solo career and started his own production company called “Hard and B.” His song “Time to make Love” made it to the regular playlist on the radio. After this, what lead to a major turning point in his career was when he worked on “Fucked Up,” which was a remake of Akon’s “Locked Up.” T-Pain’s version was rather more widely accepted and praised than that of Akon’s original.
When the news reached the already famous singer Akon, he rather than developing a hostile disposition towards T-Pain, recognized his potential and soon signed him under Konvict Music. The compassionate and personal style of T-Pain soon became his signature style. His record “I’m Sprung” was a huge success and exceptionally popular in the US and was ranked 8th in Billboard Hot 100. Until his second single “I’m N Luv (With a Stripper)” his songs mostly revolved around his relationships and platonic love.
It was the bolder content of his second album that gained him a larger audience. His album “Epiphany” came out on June 5, 2007, which climbed to #1 in Billboard Hot 200 chart on the very first week of its release. By then T-Pain was highlighted as a unique musician as he had an exceptional command over the Crunk & B styling at a considerably young age. He wasn’t just known for his singing but his dancing as well. During his stage performances, he had a lively stage persona and great dance moves. T- Pain has undoubtedly left his mark in the field of rap music.
