Robert Alan Morse is an American actor and singer born in Newton, Massachusetts, on May 18, 1931, as the second child of Charles Morse and Mary Silver. He went to various schools before finding his inspiration in Henry Lasker, a theatre teacher at Newton High School. After graduation, he moved to New York City to pursue his dream of becoming an actor, where he joined his elder brother Richard. The latter was already studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse. He is best known as Bertram Cooper in the critically acclaimed AMC drama series Mad Men (2007–2015), for which he received a Tony Award. He received his second Tony Award for his performance as Truman Capote in the one-person show Tru in 1989.
He repeated his role as Capote in an American Playhouse production of the play in 1992, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award. He had an uncredited appearance in the 1956 picture The Proud and Profane, starring William Holden and Deborah Kerr. Soon after, he was cast as Barnaby Tucker in Thornton Wilder's original Broadway production of The Matchmaker, beginning his career. Morse has had several Tony, Drama Desk, and Emmy nominations and victories throughout his five-decade career. He is well-known for his roles in Broadway musicals and plays, as well as films and television series. His portrayal as J. Pierrepont Finch in the Pulitzer Prize-winning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was seen as his final stride toward full stardom. Morse featured in the black comedy film The Loved One in 1965, based on Evelyn Waugh's novel of the same name, which satirized the funeral industry in Los Angeles, namely Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Morse was nominated for another Tony Award for his performance in Sugar, a 1972 musical stage version of Some Like It Hot. Morse has featured in hundreds of TV shows dating back to the Kraft Theatre and General Electric Theatre days of live television. From 1974 through 1976, he featured in five episodes of CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Morse began recurring as Bertram Cooper, a founding partner in the advertising agency Sterling Cooper, in the critically acclaimed AMC drama series Mad Men in 2007.
