Nathan Lane

Nathan Lane is an American writer, actor, as well as producer. He was named Joseph Lane when he was born on 3 February 1956 in Jersey City, New Jersey. His father Daniel Lane was a truck driver and his mother Nora Lane, a secretary. His uncle was a Jesuit priest, and he was called after him. Nathan lost his father at the very young age of 11. He along with his two siblings Daniel Jr. Lane and Robert Lane attended Catholic schools in Jersey City.

Today it’s been more than 4 decades since Nathan started his career. He started out in theatre. In 40 years he has worked in around 50 movies & TV shows. He changed his name to Nathan after the character Nathan Detroit from the musical Guys and Dolls, because there was already a Joseph Lane enrolled with Actors' Equity.

Lane has an illustrious career in cinema, television, and theatre. In "The Producers," he played Max Bialystock, and in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," he played Pseudolus. In the earlier film adaptations, Zero Mostel played both parts. There are numerous awards that he received for his work over the year. Lane has been awarded six Tony Awards for his work. He's also won six Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Obies, the Lucille Lortel Award, and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theater. The actor has also been honoured by the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance for The Nance, the Theatre World John Willis Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater, the Eugene O'Neill Monte Cristo Award, the New Dramatists Career Achievement Award, the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award, and the Eugene O'Neill Monte Cristo Award for Lifetime.

He came out of the closet in the year 1999. After having a long relationship of 18 years he married Devlin Elliott on 17 November 2015. The couple resides in Manhattan. For his involvement in the LGBTQIA+ community in 2015, he received the Human Rights Campaign Equality Award, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Vito Russo Award, The Trevor Project Hero Award and the Matthew Shepard Foundation Making A Difference Award. He has been a board member and fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for many years.
