Experimentation has always been the muse of Tamil cinema. Anjala is one such movie in which the director has tried a different concept. Well, let’s see whether this movie strikes the right chord with us.

Plot

Anjala movie also revolves around a tea shop named Anjala, which is catering to the needs of the customers for over a century, since the pre-independent days. The movie commences with the history of the tea shop. This tea shop, which is established by Pasupathi’s grandfather, is managed by Pasupathi, who is very dedicated to his shop. Even those who are in the vicinity of Anjala develop an affinity toward this shop, thereby making it a preferred place of interaction.

Vimal lives in the same town and virtually makes Anjala his second home. Also, he considers Pasupathy almost his guide. To own a two-wheeler service center Vimal applies for a loan in a bank. The lives of these simple people seem to be going smoothly when suddenly few government officers decide to demolish Anjala with the intention of broadening the road. This poses a question mark to the survival of Anjala. The people of the town oppose the government’s decision to demolish the tea shop, which is in turn rejected. And to add to the romance element of the movie, Vimal and Nandita get attracted towards each other.

There is a twist in the story when Pasupathy and Vimal gain the ire of a police officer and Subbu Panchu, a prominent person in the town. What is it that made these two dislike Pasupathy and Vimal? What happens to Anjala? Watch the movie to find out.

Star Performances

Pasupathy, who comes in two roles, is definitely the pick of the lot. He has given an exemplary performance. Vimal supports Pasupathy quite well. Nandita’s role is restricted to just the romance element and in that regard, she has pulled off her role with ease. The actors who play the friends of Vimal are quite ok. Rithvika impresses us in her brief role.

Analysis

Have you ever wondered what role a tea shop plays in our daily lives? These are some small yet significant moments in life and guys catch upon important matters by sipping a glass of tea. Anjala innocently begins with this concept.

The director of the movie, Thangam Saravanan, who debuts with this film. should be appreciated for coming out with a fresh subject. He has earnestly attempted to show the good side of human beings. Dhilip Subbarayan, who is an acclaimed action choreographer, endeavors into production through this movie.

What’s there?

  • The flashback sequences are executed with a realistic touch.
  • The cinematography of Ravi Kannan is outstanding.
  • Editing of Praveen K L doesn’t hinder the progress of Anjala.

What’s not there?

  • The affinity of the people towards the tea shop could have been shown with intensity.
  • The love track lacks maturity.
  • The comedy track in no way elevates the film.
  • Sometimes we tend to get the feel of a tv serial.
  • Music of Gopi Sundar is average.
  • The songs seem to have been forced into the movie.

Verdict

Anjala should be appreciated for the earnestness of debutante Thangam Saravanan and also for the earnest performance of Pasupathy.
