Plot
In a fictional Zubrowska, Zero Moustafa, a refugee, is employed by Monsieur Gustave H. Gustave as a lobby boy in the Grand Budapest Hotel. The swanky hotel has its colorful tales to talk of, when Gustave is accused of the murder of a wealthy client, Madame D., and is imprisoned. At the same, Zubrowska is held under siege by the fascists. Now it is up to Zero and Monsieur Gustave to prove their innocence, as well as save The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Star Performances
If the film has no songs, and yet it gives you the impression of a near-perfect musical, you know the musician has done a superb job. On that note, full marks to Alexandre Desplat.
Wes Anderson uses vibrant colors to describe an era gone by, using humor and drama in just the right quantity.
The pair of Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori is simply phenomenal. They are the heart and soul of this grand spectacle.
Analysis
If you are one of those, who is missing the dazzling Hollywood musicals, The Grand Budapest Hotel is a great solution to that. Despite having little to no songs, this slick dramedy, written and directed by Wes Anderson, is grand, opulent, and rich in emotions.
This film explores fascism, friendship, loyalty, and nostalgia, all in one go. The craftsmanship in this film is simply exquisite. Probably the makers had watched a huge cache of Europe-set Hollywood films or even glanced upon some alpine resorts of the yesteryears. That is reflected beautifully in this film.
Ralph Fiennes as the crafty, yet benevolent hotel concierge is simply fascinating. Nobody would believe that this is the same guy who would make us freak out as Amon Goth in ‘Schindler’s List’, or even Lord Voldemort in the eponymous “Harry Potter” franchise. Tony Revolori as the lobby boy Zero is to him what Robin is to Batman. His equation with Agatha, played by Saoirse Ronan, is endearing. Oh, almost forgot, we have the likes of Adrien Brody, Jude Law, and Willem Dafoe too!
Finding flaws in this film would be sheer nitpicking. However, even if ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ may not be the most profound film of Wes Anderson, it is the most enjoyable film for sure.
