Plot

Laszlo Toth, an architect, is a holocaust survivor who was forcedly separated from his wife and niece and was immigrated to the US. He moved to Philadelphia, where he stayed with his cousin Attila and his wife Audrey. Attila informs Laszlo that his wife and niece are alive. As his wife is not in good health, they are unable to move from there. Attila provides him a job in his furniture business. In a turn of events, Laszlo is sent out of Attila’s home. He gets work as a labourer in loading coal. However, he becomes a drug addict. After learning that he was an expert architect, Harrison offered him a project. After some years, he meets his wife in a wheelchair and his niece, who lost her speech. Were he able to bring them back to normal? The rest of the story follows the lives of these three.

Star Performance

Adrien has given a spectacular performance. He lived in the character and brings in his face every minute expression that makes us applaud. Felicity Jones is a perfect fit as Lazlo’s wife. Adrien and Felicity’s on-screen chemistry is fantastic. She is one of the few characters who has given the needed emotional depth to the film. Guy Pearce did his job with perfection. He is excellent in the role of Harrison. Stacy and Joe have also done their job well.

Analysis

Though the film has a runtime of over three hours, yes, double the usual runtime, we don’t feel it much due to the screenplay and excellent performances. The characters are neatly designed. The stars, too, fit well in the role and make us watch the film throughout. Cinematography is one of the important pluses of the film. The frames and colors are fantastic for every photography enthusiast. The music is adequate for the theme.

What’s There?

  • The characters are penned with depth
  • The performances are excellent, especially by Adrien and Felicity

What’s Not There?

  • Nothing significant to be mentioned

Verdict

If you love watching a period movie with some great performances, this is a good choice!
