is a drama film by Philippe Falardeau, which covers the story of 4 children, during and post the second Sudanese civil war, thus tracing the(looks like never ending) journey of these refugees.
Plot:Â Mamere and Theo are the sons of the Chief of a village in Southern Sudan. The attack destroys their home as well as their parents, thus making the eldest son, Theo to don the position of the Chief and thus, takes the responsibility to lead young people, which includes his sister Abital, from any more attacks. The group somehow makes it to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, where they meet similar groups. They meet Jeremiah and Paul, whose skills are essential for their survival.
After thirteen years, these four children, who are now adults, leave the camp in Kenya and head to America. They arrive in Kansas, where they meet Carrie Davis (

), an employment agency counselor whose responsibility is to find now jobs for them. It was a tough task for her, as things like straws, light switches, and telephones, looked alien to them. Carrie has triumphantly kept herself away from any emotional attachment to anyone, but these refugees, for whom, everything was new, who needed support to rebuild their fallen lives, desperately required that. So, does Carrie help them rebuild their lives? Ans, do these children succeed in it? Watch the movie to find out.
Star Performances: Excellent performances from Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, and Emmanuel Jal makes the film very beautiful. These are the victims in the film, but we perceive them to be victims in real life too. That’s the depth of their acting. Also, a phenomenal performance by Reese Witherspoon adds more essence to the movie. As the victims of the movie look at their new world, their performance makes us look at the world the same way they look.
Positives: The Good Lie is a moving, heart touching movie that shakes our heads. Right from the screenplay to acting to the post production, everything requires a standing ovation as it is all well set.
Negatives:Although The Good Lie received mainly positive reviews, there were slacks here and there. It is a bit predictable and funny at times, like, when these Sudanese get adjusted to the American conditions. Also, the ending was not quietly convincing and seemed a bit strange.Â
Verdict:Â If you are looking for a picture with moving characters, then, this is the right movie for you. Excellent acting, powerful story combined with excellent making, makes The Good Lie, a rare movie, that deserves to be seen.
