Plot
The pope dies due to a heart attack. Now, the cardinals have to choose the new pope under the leadership of Thomas Lawrence, their dean. Four people in the pope contest are Aldo Bellini from the United States, Joshua Adeyemi from Nigeria, Joseph Tremblay from Canada, and Goffredo Tedesco from Italy. Janusz Woźniak, the prefect from the papal household, says that the late pope wanted Joseph Tremblay to resign his post, but Tremblay denies this. Meanwhile, Bellini discusses with his supporters to prevent Goffredo Tedesco from becoming the pope. When these things are happening, the arrival of Vincent Benitez, the Archbishop from Kabul, surprises Thomas Lawrence. In the first phase of voting, none of them secured the required amount of votes. Joshua Adeyemi leads in the ballots, a bit higher than the others. Meanwhile, his confrontation with a nun, Sister Shanumai, results in a discussion about their relationship. Who is she? What’s her relationship with Adeyemi? Who wins the pope election? The rest of the story discusses this.
Star Performance
Fiennes’ performance is quite impressive. His role is too complex, and he did justice to the taken role. Stanley Tucci, Carlos Diehz, Sergio Castellitto, John Lithgow, and Lucian Msamati have done what was required of them.
Analysis
The simple plot, complex characters, and excellent performances make the film interesting. The setting is impressive, and the arrival and the backstory of the contestants are finely penned and executed. A good set of actors are chosen, and they fit well in the characters. The climax twist is the highlight of the movie. The human dilemma is beautifully captured. The director should be appreciated for bringing out the emotional output. The music travels well with the screenplay, and the visuals are pretty decent, too.
