Sukumar is the son of a farmer from the Alanganallur district near Madurai, who had come to Chennai in the year 1997, seeking for a chance to star in Tamil cinemas. His primary on-screen presence was in the movie Sakthi in the year 1997, where he displayed the role of a dancer beside Vadivelu in a song, with numerous critics commenting about his likeness to the actor.
