P. Unnikrishnan, the playback singer, needs no introduction to music lovers. His voice is equally suitable for classical music, film music, devotional music and even light music. The actor has sung many devotional songs of Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappan, Lord Venkateswara, and Devi among others. This singer is a disciple of Dr. S. Ramanathan.

Unnikrishnan has balanced both classical music and light music well and never allowed him to get carried away for just compulsion of cinematic glamor. Unnikrishnan had the capacity to reach higher levels, provided he did not get lost in star value. That is why many bring comparison with famous K J Yesudas.

This Carnatic vocalist was born on July 9, 1964, in Palakkad, Kerala. He, however, did his schooling and college studies in Chennai. He even worked as an executive in Parry s Confectionery Ltd. Kesari was the promoter of the popular Telugu women's magazine Gruhalakshmi and a renowned Ayurvedic physician.

Unnikrishnan’s initial movies itself fetched him the national award; it was for the song Ennavale Adi Ennavale" (film Kadhalan) and "Uyirum Neeye" ( film Pavithra). Both the songs were composed by A. R. Rahman. The singer then formed an excellent combination with A.R. Rahman and went to give many hit songs in films like ‘ Karuthamma’, ‘Kadhal Desam’ and ‘Anthimanthaarai’. The singer also has sung sweet solo and duet numbers for music composers like Deva, S. A. Rajkumar, Ilayaraja, etc. Unni also had sung songs with veteran playback singers such as Chitra, Anuradha Sriram, Harini, Shankar Mahadevan and S Janaki.

The singer is more at ease in singing classical songs than pop songs. In 1997, he ventured into Telugu playback singing in a film ‘Ugadi’ where he sang under music composition of S.V. Krishna Reddy. The singer also had sung in Kannada and Malayalam languages too. Unni has his h own charm even when performing on stages and other musical concerts where he tries his best to make the audience feel content upon hearing his voice. The singer also has sung recently for movies like ‘ Nannbenda’ and ‘ Yaan’ for music composer Harris Jayaraj,

Unni is married to  Priya, a classical dancer. They were married on November 1994 and had a son named Vasudev Krishna and a daughter named Uthara. Now Uthara is also following her father’s legacy as a talented singer.
