Late actor ‘Rocket Ramanathan’, as much as he is known for his presence on the big screen was an extremely active participant in theatre. He acted in various stage plays and shows before making his way to the film industry. ‘Rocket’ Ramanathan, originally called Ramanathan made his debut as a comedian in Tamil film industry in the 1982 movie Sparisam directed by RC Sakthi where he worked alongside Tamil movie star S Ve Sekhar. In the 1970s, he added the suffix ‘Rocket’ to his name. Ramanathan has also appeared in Oru Pullanguzhal Aduppudhugiradhu (1983), Valartha Kada (1983), Mann Soru (1984), Kovil Yanai (1986).
One of the most popular movies that added to his popularity is Manakanakku (1986), where he acted alongside Vijayakanth. Widely known as Tamil Nadu’s first mimcry artist, Ramanathan received acclaim for popularising and introducing mimicry in the Tamil film industry. He was conferred with the Kalaimamani Award and the Kalaiselvam Award by the Tamil Nadu Government and the Nadigar Sangam respectively. The actor was receiving treatment for chronic diabetes and passed away due to diabetes and age-related health issues at the age of 74 at his Chennai residence in September 2018.
