Shebin Benson is an Indian actor who works in the Malayalam film industry. He hails from Nilambur in Kerala and was born to Christian parents. He was born on 27th November 1995 and his star sign is Sagittarius. Benson has a special inclination towards playing young and jovial characters that have loads to express. Shebin is a student of Visual Communication at the SRM University in Chennai.
Deeply passionate about photography and art, Benson’s debut project was the 2013 film
Idukki Gold, directed by
Aashiq Abu. Getting baptized into the film industry was a mere serendipity for Benson, who originally wanted to make his career in painting or photography. It was on the pretext of meeting with photographer Ajay Menon that Shebin reached Kochi, and auditioned for the role.
In his debut, he essayed the younger self of Madan, played by
Maniyanpilla Raju. Although his conservative parents were initially disapproving of his venture into acting, eventually they gave in and supported his decision. Shebin, who wants to play roles on the lines of Emile Hirsch’s portrayal of Christopher McCandless in Into the Wild, strongly feels that film characters should have depth, rather than being commercial.
After Idukki Gold, he went to work alongside the likes of Mammootty and
Asha Sarath in Ranjith Shankar’s 2014 film Varsham. It was a dream-come-true moment for Shebin to share the screen with the legendary National Award-winning actor, and he calls himself a ‘student’ rather than a ‘fanboy’.
Further, Benson went on to play the younger self of Fahadh Faasil’s character Aloshi, in
Iyobinte Pusthakam, directed by
Amal Neerad and released in the same year as Varsham. He also featured in the 2015 film
Chirakodinja Kinavukal, directed by Santhosh Viswanath. Shebin’s portrayal of the teenaged Dawood Ibrahim in
Sajid Yahiya’s directorial debut
Inspector Dawood Ibrahim, released in 2016, earned him acclaim and popularity among the youth.
Shebin’s second venture with director Sajid Yahiya was the 2018 film Mohanlal, which was about a Mohanlal fan played by
Manju Warrier. Benson essayed the role of young Sethumadhavan, originally played by
Indrajith Sukumaran. Incidentally, Shebin’s brother
Nebish Benson is also an actor who has worked with Shebin in films like Iyobinte Pusthakam and Inspector Dawood Ibrahim.
He considers the film industry to be a place of learning, and compares Idukki Gold, to a school, and Iyobinte Pusthakam to a university, so exponential has been the increase in his learning process. Shebin is a frequent user of the micro-blogging site Twitter and follows people like
Farhan Akhtar and Ellen DeGeneres.
He is passionate about Hollywood pop songs, prefers to wear Jack and Jones and Levis, and is terrified of Kim ki-duk’s infamous horror film Moebius. Shebin’s other films include 10 Kalpanakal (2016), Kattu (2017), Kaly (2018), Paviettante Madhurachoorai (2018) and
Oronnonnara Pranayakadha (2018).
