in the lead role, none of the Malayalam movies that released even managed to recover their costs, let alone succeed commercially.
In February, Malayalam films collected merely 24 crores in total. Interestingly, the budget of these movies amounted to around 75 crores in total. Only one out of the 17 releases succeeded at the box office, while the rest flopped. One movie amongst them managed to earn just 10000 rupees in total.
Even January wasn’t very great for Malayalam cinema. According to the producers, loss of 110 crores was recorded from the 28 releases for the month of January. Only ‘Rekhachitram’ turned out to be the sole exception, which earned a total of 55 crores worldwide, over a shoestring budget of 9 crores. This is why some of the film producers have warned of an imminent strike in June, if the problems weren’t addressed immediately.
