Javed Jaffrey is a talented actor, dancer, comedian, voice actor, impressionist, VJ, an ad filmmaker, emcee and politician, who predominantly work in the Bollywood film and television industry. He was born on December 4, 1963, in Malliwala, Uttar Pradesh in India. Javed is the son of renowned film actor, '
Jagdeep', who is also famous for doing comic roles.
He debuted in the year 1985 in Subhash Ghai’s 'Meri Jung'. Aside from acting as the antagonist in the film, he showed off his talent in dancing to the tune of Bol Baby Bol Rock-N-Roll, which he also sang along with
Kishore Kumar and S. Janaki. Since then, there is no looking back.
Javed has appeared in over 35 films. When Chanel V was launched, he built a platform for his talent and showed his remarkable mark of comedy on television during the 90s. He anchored Channel V’s cult shows, the Timex Timepass, and Videocon Flashback. Javed is also the co-founder and a permanent celebrity judge of India’s first dance reality show,
Boogie Woogie. The show was produced and directed by his brother,
Naved Jaffrey, along with actor and producer,
Ravi Behl. Boogie Woogie has started in the year 1996, and it broke all the records after being the longest running dance reality show in India, as it spanned for more than 15 years. Javed has been part of several television shows including Jaaved Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), Tele Housie, Chak Dhoom Dhoom and more. In 1998, he originated, written and choreographed the song Mumbhai from the comedy film, Bombay Boys. He has been part of the films like '
Hanuman' (1998), Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003),
Salaam Namaste (2005),
Singh Is Kinng (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Lafaney Parindey (2010), Besharam (2013), War Chhod Na Yaar (2013),
Bang Bang (2014), Picket 43 (2015) and a lot more. Javed earned the Best Comedian Award at the IIFA for his outstanding performance as Jaggu Yadav in Salaam Namaste.
Dubbing is one of Javed’s professions. He has dubbed different Disney (Hindi) characters like Mickey Mouse, Don Karnage and Goofy. He also scripted Disney’s Hindi version of
Jungle Book 2 and The Incredibles. His character as Charlie Anna in the computer animated 3D film,
Roadside Romeo was highly praised. He narrated popular Japanese television shows’ Takeshi Castle (Pogo TV) and
Ninja Warrior (Hungama) that earned a massive number of followers. Javed is also a jury at the Karaoke World Championships India (KWC India), along with singers
Remo Fernandes and Sunita Rao and music directors Raju Singh,
Sulaiman Merchant, Savio Paul D’sa (founder of KWC India) and
Lesle Lewis (singer-composer).
He repeatedly hosted several awarding events such as Filmfare, IIFA and Screen Awards and has performed in a large number of live shows worldwide. He had the opportunity to share the stage with Hollywood’s top performers like
Michael Jackson, Spice Girls, Sting and Queen and also with Bollywood leading artists like
Shah Rukh Khan,
Aamir Khan, A R Rahman,
Anil Kapoor, and many more.
Since the 80s, Javed is also into the advertisement and has worked as a model, choreographer, producer, director, and copywriter. He penned and co-directed Maggi Sauce commercials, which earned several recognitions for the past 25 years. He hosted Paritosh Painter’s Big Googly (aired on Big 92.7 FM). He has presented life membership at the Asian Academy of Film & Television.
Javed got married to Pakistani actress,
Zeba Bakhtiar in 1989, but they got separated in 1990. He got married again to Habiba Jaffrey, and they have three children namely Alaviaa, Mizaan and Abbas. He participated in AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) in 2014 and was ranked 5th after the Indian general election.
