His parents were Jack, an athletic director and Beverly, a former government worker. His nickname was Nick, kept by his father. He attended college in upstate New York. There he hitchhiked to New York City just to witness a wrestling battle between Jimmy Snuka and Don Muraco. He was so influenced that he decided to take up wrestling as his career. He started training under Dominic DeNucci and made his debut in the late 1980s. After wrestling across various countries throughout the world, he finally signed a contract with World Championship Wrestling, under the name Cactus Jack. He fought outstanding battles against Sting, Rick Steiner, Scott Steiner, and most importantly Vader, in which he lost an ear in 1992. After his contract with WCW expired, he fought for Extreme Championship Wrestling won the heroic IWA King of the Death Match in Japan in 1995. Later he wrestled for the World Wrestling Federation under the name Mankind.
There he debuted with a fight against Undertaker, first of the many classics fought between the two. He eventually won the WWF World Title in 1998, after defeating The Rock, fulfilling his childhood dream. After retirement, Foley started writing and is a bestselling and highly acclaimed author, having written two autobiographies, both bestsellers and topping the charts, many children’s books and a novel. He is the first wrestler to come on Howard Stern's radio show. In his autobiography, he said that his favorite animated movie is The Iron Giant (1999), which is in his top four favorite films, and for many years he considered his match with Sting at WCW Beach Blast (1992) to be the greatest match he'd ever had. He is married to Collette, and they have three sons and a daughter together.
