He has four brothers, and all are actors. His mother Carol Newcomb was a housewife and his father; Alexander Rae Baldwin Jr was a high school teacher and a football coach.

Alec had his primary education from Alfred G. Berner High School in Massapequa. He also played football in school days. Baldwin has worked as a busboy in the disco studio 54. He has attended George Washington University, later he transferred to Tisch School of the Arts, a college under New York University. Then Baldwin became the member of actors' studio.

He did his first Broadway in 1986 in Joe Orton's Loot. He did many Broadways like Caryl Churchill's Serious Money, Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. For His role in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, he was nominated for Tony Award in Best Actor category. Baldwin was also nominated for Emmy 1995 for the television version of his production. He played the role of Macbeth in 1998 at the public theater.  Baldwin was the part of the movie Twentieth Century in 2004. He returned to the Broadway on April 18, 2013, with orphans in which he played the role of Harold. Baldwin’s first television show was "The Doctors" in 1980 to 1982.

He worked as the narrator for a show in kid’s channel, "Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends." Later he left the show for his role in "The Cat in the Hat" in 2002. He has also made appearance in the most popular show on television "FRIENDS," in 2002. Baldwin has written the episode of Law & Order entitled "Tabloid." He has won two Golden Globe Awards, two Emmy awards, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards.  The second time he was also nominated for Emmy in the best actor in the television category for his role in Jack Donaghy in 2008. This was his seventh nomination in 2008 and his first win. He again won the award in 2009. His first movie was Forever, Lulu in 1987 where he played a minor role. His first movie as the lead was "The Hunt for Red October" (1990). Baldwin got nominated for the Academy Award, the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globe in 2003 for his acting in the movie "The Cooler." His other movies include "The Aviator" (2004), "The Departed" (2006), "It's Complicated" and much more. He was also the part of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015.
