John Madden was born on 10th April 1936 in Austin, USA. John’s father was Earl Russell Madden, who was an auto mechanic and his mother was, Mary Margaret. He is married to Virginia Fields. They tied the knot on 26th December 1959 and together have two sons, Joseph and Michael.
He did his schooling from Jefferson High School in San Francisco and graduated in 1954. He did his major from the University of Oregon and was a member of the Oregon Ducks Football Program in his college. Then he took a transfer to San Mateo College, a community college in California and again to California Polytechnic State University (CPSU). Here at San Mateo and CPSU, he did his BS (1959) and MS (1961) in Education and also played on both sides of defence and offence. He was also a catcher of the CPSU’s baseball team.
He is an ex-football player of the American football team. He has played in the National Football League (NFL). He has also held the position of a commentator at the matches of NFL. He was also the head coach of Oakland Raiders, who won the Super Bowl. He represented them at the American Football Conference.
Madden’s career as a coach started in 1960 when he was appointed as the assistant coach of the Allan Hancock College, Santa Maria and then the head coach from 1962 onwards. From the year 1963 to 1966, Madden worked as an assistant defensive coach at San Diego. He started his professional football coaching in 1967 as the coach of the Oakland Raiders. He became the head coach of the Raiders in 1969 soon after the resigning of the previous head coach, John Rauch. And this is how he became the youngest head coach of a football team, at the age of 32.
John is also associated with the television sports channels the Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and NBC Sports. He worked as a commentator, coach, and motivational speaker on these channels. This sports icon has a very intriguing commentating style. His way of commentating is loved by all because of the interjections he uses. For this proficiency, he has even received the Sports Emmy Award for the Best Sports Event Analyst for a record of 14 times till now. He was honoured with the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in 2006, and the NSSA Hall of Fame Award in 2010. He took retirement from the football industry on 16th April 2009, after 30 years of service.
