Tahliah Debrett Barnett Smith was born on 16th January, 1988, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Her father is from Jamaica, whereas her mother is from England, and has a few ancestral connections with Spain making her from Spanish descendant. Her mother was a professional gymnast, and also a very good and graceful dancer. Tahliah Debrett Barnett Smith was always so inspired by her mother's talents. Although she was raised by her step-father, she actually got to meet her Jamaican biological father when she became a young adult.

Tahliah Debrett Barnett Smith always wanted to make rich music like Ella Fitzgerald, who she was drawn towards since she was a little child. Tahliah Debrett Barnett Smith took several dance classes and also had her mother to look up to in the times she needed, since her mother was a professional dancer and a gymnast. Also, her biological father is a Jazz musician.

Tahliah Debrett Barnett Smith is recognized by everybody else now in the world by FKA Twigs. She started her career by moving to London and becoming a back dancer for many music videos which were released. She was noticed in various tracks of many English singers. Tahliah Debrett Barnett Smith was recognized as a back dancer in Do it like a Dude, which was sung by Jessie Jay. She wanted to be more than just a back dancer, and wanted the limelight on herself to show her talent.

Tahliah Debrett Barnett Smith also appeared in many other comic strips, and she was named Twigs because of the sound that was made when her joints in her body cracked. In 2012, FKA Twigs was on the cover of the i-D magazine. In 2014, Boots, who is a producer recognized for his work which includes producing music for Beyoncé's eponymous album, announced that he was working on a brand new third EP with FKA Twigs.
