Anne Wood, CBE, was born on December 18, 1937, in London, England. Anne Wood is an English children's television producer who worked with Andrew Davenport on series including Teletubbies. She's also the founder of Rosie and Jim and Tots TV. The Eleanor Farjeon Award was given to her. She grew up at Tudhoe Colliery, a tiny coal-mining community near Spennymoor, County Durham, England. She earned her secondary school teaching certificate from Bingley Training College in Yorkshire and began her teaching career in Spennymoor. In 1959, she married Barrie Wood and relocated to Surbiton, Surrey, to begin teaching at Hollyfield Road Secondary School.
This was the age of the first children's paperback book, and Anne was an early pioneer of Scholastic Publications' children's paperback book club plan for schools. After her daughter was born, she left teaching and was hired by Scholastic as the editor of their Children's Book Club. When she and her family relocated to Byfleet, Surrey, she became more interested in how literature and children's growth may be linked. She developed and edited Books for Your Children, a quarterly journal aimed at parents, teachers, and librarians that was entirely backed by children's publishers, in 1965. The journal was first backed by the UK Arts Council with a small cash grant. Wood founded the Federation of Children's Book Groups in 1969 to enhance the promotion of children's literature, an organization that still exists today. Wood was also given the Eleanor Farjeon Award in 1969 for her contribution to the promotion of children's books. She has won 12 awards.
