Nayyar was born in 1981 on April 30th in London, England. Despite this he was raised in
India. In New Delhi he played badminton for his high school, St. Columba’s School. In 1999 Kunal decided to move to America in hopes of getting his college degree. He wanted to get a Bachelor of Science in Finance. He attended the University of Portland and while he was studying he also took acting classes on the side. He also appeared in a few of the school’s plays. Kunal made his decision to pursue acting full time after he participated in the American College Theater Festival. He then went on to attend Temple University where he got his Master of Fine Arts in acting. Kunal did several small ads and commercials for a while before finally acting in his first US production. He gained popularity when he play an Indian exchange student in Huck and Holden. In 2006 he co-wrote Cotton Candy with
. The play opened in New Delhi to positive reviews. Nayyar also guest starred on NCIS as an Iraqi terrorist. After this he was encouraged to audition for
The Big Bang
Theory by his agent. He was awarded the role of Raj Koothrappali. In 2012 he did some voice work as Gupta in
: Continental Drift.
