Humphrey DeForest Bogart, or Humphrey Bogart, was an Academy Award winning American screen actor. After a stint in the US Navy in World War I, Bogart began his career as a theatre actor in 1921, switching to film acting when the stock market crashed in 1929, which reduced the demand for plays. Bogart starred in more than 75 feature films during his long and illustrious acting career spanning almost 30 years.
He was born on 25th December, 1899 in the New York City. His parents were Belmont DeForest Bogart and Maud Humphrey. His father was a cardiopulmonary surgeon, and his mother was a commercial illustrator. Bogart starred in the 1940's classic ‘Casablanca’, and other iconic films of the same period, like The Maltese Falcon (1941) and The Big Sleep (1946). These phenomenal films effectively made him into a cultural icon.

He received Academy Award nominations for his 1954 film The Canine Mutiny, and also the 1942 classic Casablanca. ‘Sabrina’ in 1954 and The Harder They Fall in 1956 were amongst the most notable films of his later years. Bogart suffered from esophageal cancer during the year 1956, while he was still at the prime of his career. He passed away at the age of 57 on 14th January 1957, and was put to rest at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in Glendale, California, U.S.A.
Bogart was married a total of four times. His first marriage to actress Helen Menken in 1926 lasted for less than a year; his second marriage was to Mary Phillips, which too ended in a divorce.
