Bruhl’s portrayal of the Niki Lauda, the former Formula 1 driver, in the Ron Howard-directed “Rush” garnered him critical acclaim and was nominated for various awards.
Bruhl was born to the German TV director, Hanno Bruhl in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Bruhl’s mother was of Spanish descent, which made Bruhl fluent in Spanish, alongside German, French, Catalan, English, and Portuguese. Bruhl’s acting career began in 1995 with an appearance as a street kid in the television show “Verbotene Liebe” (Forbidden Love). The early 2000s saw Bruhl feature in the starrer, 'Deeply', and the German movies No Regrets and The White Sound. For his performances in those films, Bruhl was presented with 2 Bavarian Film Awards and 3 German Film Awards for the Best Young Actor. 2002 saw Bruhl cast as Arbo in the Zoltan Spirandelli directed “Vaya con Dios.” Bruhl pocketed 2 German Critics Awards and One Bavarian Film Award for the Best Actor. Bruhl breakthrough as an international star came in 2003 with Wolfgang Becker’s comedy, Good Bye Lenin. In that year, Bruhl pocketed a Bambi Award, a European Film Award, and a Bavarian Film Award for the Best Actor. Consequently, Bruhl was flooded with movie roles such as the Stefan Arndt produced drama "Love in Thoughts", the starrer “Ladies in Lavender,” Christian Carion’s war movie “Joyeux Noel", and Paul Laverty’s thriller “Cargo". The year 2009, marked an important year in Bruhl’s career when he played the role of Fredrick Zoller in Quentin Tarantino’s historical film, Inglorious Basterds. For his work in the movie, Bruhl was the recipient of a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In 2013, Bruhl was lauded for his portrayal of the former Formula One driver, as Niki Lauda in the Ron Howard’s Rush. Bruhl has also featured in movies such as the
