City and is the boy of professional Robert Mangold and mother Sylvia Plimack Mangold. He was brought up in Hudson River Valley.
After his graduation from the Washingtonville High School, he was accepted into, and next visited the California Institute of the Arts film program. While there, he coached under Alexander Mackendrick. During his final year, Mackendrick recommended that Mangold should examine at the CalArts School of Theater as a performer adjacent his formal film studies. In 1985 Mangold ensured a writer/director contract at Disney. He penned a television drama and co-wrote the animated story Oliver and Company.
A few years later, he traveled to New York and went to Columbia University's Film School, where he received a degree with an MFA in the movie. While there; he graduated under Miloš Forman and developed Heavy and Cop Land. He worked continuously as a director and feature writer ever since 1995, when his debut story, Heavy, got the best directing award at the Sundance Film Festival.
