He was a student of the school titled New Heys Comprehensive School. He studied at this school for about a span of 7 years. The years of his schooling here were from 1973 to 1980.
He had a passion for working in the field of cinema and thus, he went to drama school right after completing his education. Soon after culminating his course at the movie school, he became a part of a venture, which got the name Percival Smith Associates. The organization was a subsidiary of Cinequip. The institute was created by Brian Percival and Tony Smith jointly. Cinequip was a well-known company which produced advertisements. He initialized from here and went on to become a renowned director of commercials too. Not long after that, he started directing motion pictures.
Some of the motion pictures he directed were North & South, The Old Curiosity Shop, Pleasure land, and The Ruby in the Smoke. ShakespeaRe-told (Much Ado About Nothing) was also one of the feature films on which he worked on the direction. He received a BAFTA Award for his work on this movie. It was the second time that he won this award. He made another short film with the length of about nine minutes with the title About a Girl. The video earned him another BAFTA Award in the category Best Short Film. Not only the BAFTA Award, but it also won many other honors at various film festivals. It released in the year 2001.
