He was born on 11 July 1961 in Salford, England, to a Pakistani father and English mother. He was raised mainly in the former country by his parents only. He completed his schooling at one of the nearby prestigious schools and later went to a University for higher studies. Hence, he attended Salford College of Technology to study drama and completed his graduation in 1982. Afterward, he studied acting at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, London, and finished in 1984. After that, de decided to follow his passion and entered the film industry to pursue acting. He began his journey through theatres and attracted a large audience through that. Also, he started writing plays in the mid-1990s. Tamasha Theatre Company, co-production with the Royal Court and Birmingham Repertory Theatre, produced his first show was East is East (1996). The play received enormous fame and love from the audiences and got nominated for a 1998 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best New Comedy. Khan won both a British Independent Film Award and a London Critics' Circle Film Award for his screenplay in the film version of the play and also got nominated for two BAFTA Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Carl Foreman Award for the Most Promising Newcomer, European Film Award for Best European Screenwriter.
This play provided him with tremendous popularity from viewers all around the world. Also, it helped him in establishing his name across the nation. In 2000, the film won Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film.
