The Kerala State Film Awards are for movies made in Kerala. Kerala State Chalachitra Academy presents the program. Department of Cultural Affairs, Kerala is the main body. They have been doing this Award Show since 1969. From 1969 to 1997, the program was overseen straightforwardly by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Kerala Government. A Jury formed, to select the deserving awardees. The Department of Cultural Affairs, Kerala Govt. formed the Jury. The destinations and elements of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Kerala is to help Government in the definition of approaches associated with film and TV-related activities.

To set up a video chronicle and to oversee and disseminate State Award for movies and video programs. To set up an Audio Visual Library for general society and a documentation cell to archive the historical backdrop of Malayalam Cinema and profile of actors. To sort out film gratefulness and study camps in better places and to elevate youngsters' movies to make adequate game plans to display them in schools and other social focuses. The Jury comprises of famous identities from the Industry. A separate Jury is for Literature on Cinema Awards. Every year, the team invites various movies for the Award.

The Jury decide the Winners according to their view about the movies. The Awards means to advance movies with masterful values and empower specialists, professionals and makers. Minister of Cultural Affairs announces the Awards. The Chief Minister of Kerala displays the Awards. Overall, T.V Chandran won the Award for the Best Director. Murali won the Best Actor Award for an outstanding performance in Neythukaran. Suhasini won the Best Actress Award for her role in the movie Theerthadanam. Best Child Artist was Krishna K for the movie Saree. The movie Sheesham written by T.K Rajeev Kumar won for the Best Story. M.G Radhakrishnan won the Best Music Director Award for the song Achaneynenikku Ishtam. Best Male Singer was K.J Yesudas for the song Ravanaprabhu. K.S Chitra got the Best Female Singer Award. She recieved great appreciation for her song Theerthadanam.

Priyanandan won the Best Debut Director Award for movie Neythukaran. Anukalpanathintae Attaprakaram won the Best Book on Cinema Award. Sudha Warrier wrote the book. Cinemayude Varthamanam by Author O.K Johny won the Special Jury Best book on Cinema Award.
