Sunny Joseph is a very well-known cinematographer from India who works predominantly in Malayalam films. He was born in the state of Kerala on the 12th of October in 1957. He is best known for his incredible work in Piravi, a Malayalam feature movie directed by the famous director Shaji n. Karun. His parents CV Joseph and Thressiamma brought him up with two brothers and six sisters.
From 1972 to 1974 he studied in St. Michael’s college in Cherthala and got his P.D.C. Then he pursued a B.Sc in the field of Zoology from a college named Deva Matha under Mahatma Gandhi University, from 1974 to 1977. He also did a PG Diploma in Motion Picture Photography from FTII in Pune and graduated in 1983. He began his career in 1983 by working as an assistant cinematographer with Shri. From 1985 to 1987, he was the producer, Editor as well as the Cameraman at a college in Vellore called Christian Medical College.
He directed about ten short films and a handful of television shows. He possesses around 27 years of experience in the cinematography industry and in these years was part of movies in eleven Indian languages including Rajasthani, Tamil, English, Punjabi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Konkani, etc. Sunny Joseph has a teaching experience with various institutions.
He was the creative consultant at LV Prasad Film and Television Academy in Chennai for eight years from 2005 to 2013. Sunny was the founder and the head of the department of Cinematography from 2005 to 2008. From 2012 to 2013 he became the head of the direction department. He holds regular workshops and teaching sessions at FTII in Pune, C-DIT in Trivandrum, SRFTI in Kolkata and many other colleges in India for aspiring students. He is the managing trustee of the Indian Society of Cinematographers, the President of Cinematographers Union of Malayalam Cinema, the General Secretary of the All India Cinematographers Association, a Life Member of South Indian Cinematographers association, MACTA and CTA.
