Plot

Starfish is an emotionally inclined drama that revolves around the life of Tara Salgaonkar. Tara is an exceptional diver who works for a dredging company. She is traumatized by her past experiences and often questions the truth behind her mother’s untimely death. The entire movie is a collection of her experiences and the hardships she faces along the way.

Her search for the truth leads her to Malta, where she gets involved in another life-threatening mission. When she finally does get some lead on her mother’s death, Tara is left speechless. Now, the urge to unravel the mystery is at its peak. Also, she is seen involved in a love triangle amidst all this chaos. The question remains, will Tara ever find the truth?

Star Performances

Starfish is an elemental film that covers many themes like unresolved past and mental health issues. The protagonist of the movie, Tara, is emotionally deprived and trying to heal from her past. Someone with finesse was required for her character and Khushalii Kumar just fit her shoes. Khushalii delivered many moving and emotionally touching scenes throughout the movie. Her efforts and attention to detail are appreciated by the audience.

Analysis

Starfish is a scenic movie that brings forward fresh faces and a unique plot to the audience. It is an adaptation of the novel Starfish Pickle but it somewhere faltered to capture the essence of the novel. The storyline is complex for the viewers and no thought is given in its execution. Also, the character of Tara Salgaonkar is ill-written, there is no concrete purpose for her actions. She is a morally compromised character whose redemption never occurs in the film.

The addition of unnecessary subplots like the love triangle between Tara and the two men, makes no sense. The first half is interesting, but as it nears the climax scene, the audience has already lost all interest. The only thing that works in the makers' favor - fantabulous cinematography. This entire film is associated with water and the way the sea and waves are captured to highlight the emotions, is commendable.

• No character development is seen in the protagonist.

• The storyline of this movie has major scope for improvement.

Verdict

Starfish is a movie that attempted to bring a fresh perspective to the industry but failed terribly. The flaws outnumber the merits, but aesthetically pleasing scenes can be a treat for sore eyes. Simply put, watch at your own risk.
