Plot
Two rivals from different college batches clash over a cultural festival. Their fight snowballs into a riot, which the political parties want to take advantage of. Will the two realize it before it’s too late?
Star PerformancesÂ
The only saving grace of this film is the technical department, who have done their best to make this film aesthetically appealing.Â
AnalysisÂ
Imagine you have to make a film. You want to pay homage to your mentor, who is a maestro in his profession. You make a movie on the same theme, incorporating some modern elements. Yet, the result comes out to be beyond underwhelming.Â
That is what Bejoy Nambiar has done with ‘Por’. On paper, it looked as if he was paying tribute to the legacy of ‘ Ayutha Ezhuthu Ayutha Ezhuthu is a Tamil TV serial that aired on >> Read More... ’. However, neither is Arjun Das as suave as Suriya Sivakumar Suriya Sivakumar is undoubtedly the biggest star i >> Read More... , nor is Kalidas Jayaram as raw as Siddharth Suryanarayan The business management graduate Siddharth has don >> Read More... . This film is the classic example of how ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’!Â
Despite having more than one writer, not even a single guy could etch one scene, just one scene that could make this ‘youth drama’ engaging enough. It is also hard to believe that this is the same Bejoy Nambiar who has films like ‘ Shaitan Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, ‘ Solo Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, ‘ Taish Taish is an Indian action thriller drama Hindi web >> Read More... ’ and even ‘Karwaan’ to his credit [thanks to his brilliant writing]. ‘Por’ is a literal cringefest, both in terms of narrative as well execution.Â
Technically, the film is not that bad. The visuals have been treated with care, and the background score is also great. However, the narrative suffers from a serious identity crisis. At one time, it aims to be a social commentary. At the other time, it switches focus to the campus life. Then, it also aims to be a romantic drama minus any nuance.Â
To make matters worse, the runtime of this film makes it look like an endless drag. Though the film is some 2 and a half hours long, the way the narrative proceeds is excruciatingly boring. We expected better from Bejoy and his team.Â
The acting performances are also far from convincing. Arjun Das tries his level best, but his act of Prabhu doesn’t convince the audience. Kalidas Jayaram is extremely forgettable in the role of Yuva, which is certainly not expected from an actor of his caliber. As for the ladies, the lesser talked about, the better.Â
What's There?
• Only the cinematography and the background score to some extent
What's Not There?
• Underwhelming editingÂ
• The pace of the movie which is slower than the snailÂ
• Narrative suffering from a serious identity crisisÂ
• Forgettable performance from most of the actorsÂ
VerdictÂ
‘Por’ [‘Dange’ in Hindi] aimed to be a no-nonsense action drama that offered a glimpse into today’s college campuses. However, a forgettable screenplay, coupled with bad direction and unimpressive performances make this a lackluster affair. The only saving grace for this film was its visuals and the background score. Watch this only if you are either a fan of Bejoy Nambiar or have lots of time to spare.    Â
