Analysis
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear JNU?
If you’re expecting protests and violent clashes, this film exactly delivers on that. The film aims to talk about the darker side of student politics in one of the most premier institutions of the nation. The film also aims to shed light on what drives the students of this institution to such extremes.
However, these promises fall flat the moment the film begins. The director seems utterly confused on what to make of this film. This results in an excessively long film, which would leave many viewers scratching their heads wondering what the hell was going on.
Now it’s not that there haven’t been attempts to show the reality of student politics in movies before. Anurag Kashyap Born on 10th September 1972, Anurag Kashyap has es >> Read More... is well known for his bold attempt with ‘ Gulaal ‘Zindagi Ka Har Rang...Gulaal’ has been known to t >> Read More... ’. However, none of these movies were as flat and uninspiring as ‘JNU’ is. A similar approach was taken in Vivek Agnihotri’s much talked about ‘The Kashmir Files’. However, unlike this movie, the approach was more nuanced, and struck a chord with the masses, especially if you have seen the final monologue by Darshan Kumar.
Is there anything even good in this movie? Yes, there are some actors who have tried their best to make this film watchable. Piyush Mishra has left an impact in his small but impactful role as Guruji. Siddharth Bodke as the nationalist student is one of the few main actors who delivered a solid performance. Even Shivjyoti Rajput, known for her previous stint in ‘Special Ops 1.5’, does justice to her role. Ravi Kishan and Vijay Raaz as the cops were okay in their roles.

Verdict
‘JNU’ is a movie that had the potential to do so much. Sadly, the makers had other ideas. Despite having the perfect recipe for a solid political drama, the film failed to leave an impact like ‘Gulaal’ and ‘The Kashmir Files’. This movie is best if avoided.
