Plot

The plot of the story revolves around a social psychologist named Stanley Milgram. He was a professor at Yale University. In 1961, Milgram conducted a series of experiment related to human’s radical behaviour. The experiment tested the human willingness to obey an upper authoritative figure while administering shock to strangers. During the first half of the film, the experiment is depicted precisely. They tested every subject. All of them scrambled under pressure and didn’t stop sending shock waves to strangers begging them to stop. The film also focused on Milgram’s personal life and introduced the audience to his wife and the mother of his two children.

The second part of the film depicted Milgram’s struggle with public pressure. He reassured people about the ethics of experiment. During his life span he conducted various experiments like small world experiment, familiar stranger experiment, the lost letter experiment and many more. Milgram took help from his students. The film also showed archived actual footage of Milgram’s experiment. Milgram died at the age of 51 years. He continued experimenting till he died.

Star performance

As the movie is a biological film, Stanley Milgram is the protagonist in the movie. Stanley is a social psychological experimenter. Peter Sarsgaard played his character. Sarsgaard did an incredible work. He showed Stanley as a perfect psychologist who solved a mystery that billions of people wondered. His acting skills throughout the film is quite authentic. His presence made the movie more intense. Another important character is Milgram’s wife, Alexandra Sasha Milgram. Winona Ryder played her character. Winona’s acting was incredible throughout the movie. She kept the character consistent in the film. Although her role was not much, she still did impressive work.

Other important characters include John Palladino, Kellan Lutz, Dennis Haysbert, Danny A. Abeckaser, Taryn Manning, Anthony Edwards, Lori Singer, Josh Hamilton, Anton Yelchin, Adriana L. Randall, Donnie Keshawarz, Vondie Curtis-Hall and John Leguizamo. The actors playing their role gave fantastic performances.

Analysis

Experimenter is a brilliant American biographical film. The film is realistic and authentic. The movie gave a great insight into the human nature. The camera perfectly demonstrated every single detail of Milgram’s experiments. The movie is purely factual as the process, set up, result everything was perfectly shown. However, the film lacked suspense, thriller and drama. The filmmakers kept their focus focused. However, the pace of the documentary is problematic. It is instead a slow movie. Not only experiment, the film also showed glimpses from Milgram’s personal life.

The screenplay is average in the movie. It is nothing special. The film’s cinematography is satisfactory. It made the script easy to understand. There are no music in the story as it lacked drama. However, the script writers did impressive work. It is a well researched movie. The execution of the script is fantastic.
