Plot
Boy Willie and his friend Lymon visit Pittsburgh to sell a truck of watermelons. As his uncle Doaker resides there, Willie visits his uncle. Doaker stays with his sister Berniece who is a widow. Willie witnesses the heirloom piano, and wants to sell it for a huge sum so that he can buy a land. When he opens up about this to Doaker, Berniece opposes the idea of selling the piano due to its historical importance. Doaker narrates the story about the piano. Yet, the emotional story didn’t touch Willie. He thinks they should consider the present and not the past. What happened next? Did they sell it? The rest of the film deals with the emotional story and Willie’s practical thinking.
Star Performance
Danielle Deadwyler’s performance as Berniece is amazing. She is sentimental and trusts that if they sell the piano, it will definitely cut the ties with their ancestors. Danielle lived as Berniece. John David Washington’s performance is energetic and impressive. His body language and choice of expressions are exciting. Samuel L Jackson didn’t have enough chance to emote too emotionally, yet he stamped his presence with his natural performance.
Analysis
The script is simple yet decent. The screenplay is gripping, and the execution is good. The stars are placed in the correct roles, and it is tough to find who is better than who. The emotional scenes are well-developed and executed. The value of relationships and sentiment are explained well to make the younger generation understand. The dialogues are long in certain places, yet they seem natural. The emotional bonding between the family members, remembering the deceased ones, and speaking about the family’s history are neatly handled and make one attached to the story instantly. The visuals are good, and the editing is pretty decent. The BGM gels well with the script and elevates some important sequences, especially in the table conference scene. Music is paused in a few places, and the silence elevates the scenes.
