2024 has seen an unsung hero saving the day for Indian cinema : re releases.
What began with Vijay’s re release of ‘Ghilli’, is now growing into a trend that was once the norm in the 90s. When there were no major releases for a long time, single screen exhibitors used to re release old films to keep the house running.
This trend took a backseat with the rise of home videos and the OTT platforms. However, after the COVID pandemic, the re releases picked up, and this year, the re releases have earned more than some of the latest releases. For instance, in Tamil cinema, ‘Ghilli’ earned more than 35 crores, which was way more than the latest releases from February to May 2024, until ‘Aranmanai 4’ saved the day for Kollywood.
