Aligarh is a hauntingly beautiful film and a poignant portrayal of the right to live and love. Manoj Bajpayee gives a career-best performance, which is one for the books. His performance garnered him critical acclaim and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. The movie was made on a budget of Rs 11 crores and grossed Rs 4.27 crores only.
One of the best films that didn’t deserve to be a flop, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! follows a rookie detective, Byomkesh, who, while investigating a chemist’s disappearance, unearths an even bigger conspiracy that will upend Calcutta. The late Sushant gives one of his best performances in the film. It was the film that showcased his dedication and skills as an actor. Sushant stayed in a hotel without any mobile phones to prepare for the role. Made on a budget of Rs 35 crores, it grossed Rs 36 crores domestically and was declared a commercial failure.
Another Rajkummar Rao film on this list, Shahid is one of the best biographies in Bollywood. It follows Shahid Azmi, a militant operative turned criminal lawyer, who fights for those falsely accused of terrorism. One of Rajkummar’s best performances came in early in his career, with Shahid. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his portrayal. The movie grossed a mere Rs 3.6 crores at the box office.
