Yechan Gunja Mahendran or famously known as Y.G.Mahendran was born as Y. Gee Mahendra on January 9, 1950 at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He is a very famous serial and cinema actor, dramatist, producer, director and also a well-known playwright singer. His father, Y.G. Parthasarathy is a known pioneer of the new Tamil drama and her mother, Rajalakshmi Parthsarathy initiated the Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan or the PSBB, a group of schools where she is also the dean located in Chennai. Y.G. Mahendra is the cousin of the veteran actress, Vyjayanthimala.
Y. G. Mahendra’s father started the UAA or the United Amateur Artists. It is a drama company build in 1952 at Madras City and it’s probably one of the first. The company became popular and successful and he came out as one of the leading dramatists of his age.
Since Y. G. Mahendra hailed from the household of the stage-lovers, he developed his interest for drama during his early age. He played as a comedian in school plays and praised by many. He studied at Don Bosco Matriculation School in Chennai and moved to A. C. College of Technology in Madras, Guindy and studied Chemical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. During college, he was hyped as a film director. When he was in his early teens, he entered UAA, the drama troupe build by his father from which he received the anticipated break he needs. Some of the first plays he made became a massive hit that attracts thousands of audiences. From that time, he became one of the renowned people in the city. Y. G. Mahendra chooses acting over his career in Industrial Ceramics and flourishing business which started in 1982. When he entered this line of businesses, his career as an actor thinned down so he spent more time on managing his businesses. Subsequently, Y. G. Mahendra’s ceramic business was sold for a big amount and he made his comeback in the production and performing as an actor.
Y. G. Mahendra was featured in the film Navagraham in 1971 by the famous director, K. Balachander. The film became an average grosser and people started to know him through his funny nasal accent. Since then, he had performed in several roles from various movies. His career spans for over forty years and finished over two hundred movies. He attended stage plays like Venkat 3, Sudesi Iyer, Kaadhalikka Neramundu, Antha 7 Aatkal, Thanthramukhi and Vietnam Veedu. He also dubbed for the Tamil version of the Telugu film, Sommokakadidhi Sokkakikidhi.
