Born on 26th April 1912, T. K. Shanmugam was a Tamil theatre and film artist. T. K. Shanmugam was born in Thiruvananthapuram, Travancore state, present-day Kerala. His family had a background in theatre and acting. T. K. Shanmugam started acting at the early age of six years. He joined the legendary theatre group Sankaradas Swamigal. He was famous for portraying the role of a Tamil woman poet. He is popularly known as Avvai T. K. Shanmugam. He got this prefix after portraying the role of saint poet Karaikal Ammaiyar in a play. Kamal Hassan referred to him as his guru and paid him a tribute in the Tamil adaptation of the Hollywood movie Mrs. Doubtfire.
