Kambar Jayaraman

Kambar Jayaraman was born as Jayaraman on 27^th April 1936 in a town near Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam. He is an actor, screenplay writer cum director. Jayaraman was the fourth child in his family. Jayaraman had been a stage, cinema, and TV artist. He had been in the Tamil entertainment industry for 66 years.  

When he was a kid, he was impressed by TR Mahalingam’s songs, and sang them in his school. After seeing his musical knowledge, his father joined him in a Nadasawaram class. Before completing the course, he was asked to join the drama troupe. His elder brother applied for Nawab Rajamanickam Company, which was one of the leading companies. As there was no vacancy, he got a place in Devi Nadaga Sabha in 1946. He was one of the 300 employees of Devi Nadaga Sabha. After cinema’s popularity rose, many people in the drama troupes started searching for movie opportunities. This paved the way for him to get the lead roles in dramas. Not only male roles, but he also played female roles in dramas. Jayaraman played the female role in a drama, Thambi by KS Gopalakrishnan.

After he joined the drama company and started doing all the works there, he was unable to meet his family. He met his family only at the time of his father and mother’s deaths. Only after 19 years he was permitted to visit his hometown. After 15 years working in Devi Nadaga Sabha, he shifted to RS Manohar’s troupe. He played the role of Lakshman in Manohar’s Ilangeswaran. When he was working in the RR Nadaga Sabha, the Seva Stage drama troupe led by SV Sahashranamam planned to stage the drama about Kambar, Kavichakravarthy. He was selected to play the role of Kambar. When the drama was staged at Bombay Tamil Sangam, K K Menon, the defence minister, presided over the function. Impressed by Jayaraman’s performance, he gave him the epithet Kambar. From then on, he is addressed as Kambar Jayaraman.

Jayaraman got an opportunity to play the lead role in Annai by KS Gopalakrishnan. He lost the opportunity due to his height. He got his first cinema opportunity with Kaidhi Kannaayiram, featuring RS Manohar and Thangavelu.
