Wayne Mark Rooney or Wayne Rooney for short is an English footballer who isthe captain of Manchester United, one of the most famous football clubs and the English National team, one of the most formidable teams in football history. He is regarded as England’s best player and had also been named ‘England’s Player of the Year’ twice. Wayne Rooney was born in Croxteth, Liverpool on 24 October 1985 to Jeanette Marie Rooney and Thomas Wayne Rooney, who were of Irish descent and Roman Catholics. He has two younger brothers, Graham and John, who is also a footballer. Since his youth, Rooney had shown tremendous interest and talent in football and was a supporter of the local football club, Everton.

He began playing for Copple house Boy’s club for the local junior league at age nine and scored 99 goals in his final season, during which Wayne was spotted by a scout from his favorite team, Everton. Rooney signed on with them and spent the following years playing within club’s youth ranks. He finally, made his national debut with Everton in August 2002. In the same year, He was also named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. He signed his first contract in 2003 and became one of the highest paid teenagers in world football.

In 2004, Rooney desired to move on, despite playing for his favorite team and left Everton to sign on with Manchester United, a move many Everton fans despised. He was only 18 when he left Everton. He made his debut with Manchester United in the 2004-05 season of the UEFA Championship League in their match against Fenerbahce and made a spectacular debut by scoring a hat-trick and an assist in a 6-2 victory over Fenerbahce. Despite a stunning debut for Rooney, the team, themselves, did not make it to the finals and Manchester United failed to get the trophy. Rooney was credited the PFA Youngest Player of the Year award.

In the 2006 Football League Cup, He scored two goals in his team’s win over Wigan Athletic in the final. This performance made him the Man of the Match and helped Manchester United win the League Cup. His club became runner-ups in the Premier League but had their hopes for the title crushed after losing to Chelsea. At the end of the Premier League 2005-06 season, Rooney had amassed 16 goals in 26 Premier League games. Rooney was banned for three-match after he hit Pepe with an elbow in an Amsterdam Tournament game against Porto, with whom Pepe played.

During the first half of the 2006 season, Rooney was in odd form and had to endure a streak of no goals until Manchester United’s game against Bolton Wanderers in which he scored a hat-trick. Subsequently, He signed a two-year contract extension with Manchester United and by the end of the season; Rooney had scored 14 goals and collected his first Premier League Medal as Manchester United finished the season as Premiership Champions. During the 2007-08 Season, Rooney suffered injuries and had to miss many games, though he did finish the season with 18 goals and also starred in the team’s victory over Chelsea in the Final of the UEFA Championship League and won the Championship League trophy. Rooney also played in the 2008 UEFA Super Cup, where Manchester United lost against Zenith Petersburg and was unable to make an impact.

In December of the same year, Rooney scored the first goal in the final match of the FIFA Club World Cup in a 1-0 victory that helped Manchester United win the Cup. During the Football League Cup of 2009-10, Rooney scored his One-Hundredth goal in the Premier League in a 3-1 win over Arsenal and Manchester United went on to win the Football League Cup in the 2009-2010 Season. He was named the FWA Footballer of the Year as the best player in English football for that season. Rooney was also named the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year in 2010.

He was part of Manchester United’s Premier League victory in 2007 to 2013, helping Manchester United become Premier League Champion for five consecutive times. Despite Rooney being United’s top scorer for the 2013 to 2015 season, United went into a slump and lost the Premier League Champion titles, both seasons. The slump continued until the team won the FA Cup, which was the first FA Cup in Rooney’s career. Wayne Rooney was drafted on to the English National team in 2003 and debuted in a friendly match against Australia on 12 February 2004 at the age of 17, making him the youngest player to play for England.

He became the youngest football player to score for the English football team in a victory over Macedonia in the UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying match. His team played in the 2004 European Championship or Euro 2004 and became the youngest scorer in completion history in a game against Switzerland, in which England won. He also joined England in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but due to a foot injury and a slow recovery, he did not perform well. He had to go scoreless in the quarter-finals, in which England lost. Rooney led the English team in the qualifying match in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where England lost. During Euro 2012, England played well and qualified at the top of their group.

However, in the last qualifying match against Montenegro, Rooney tackled a player and was given a red card and a three- match ban. However after an appeal, his ban was reduced to two games, and he appeared in two contests until England faced defeat in the quarterfinals against Italy. England qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where Rooney scored his first goal in a World Cup tournament. However, England got out of the tournament after playing only two matches, both of which England lost.

Rooney was named the new captain of the English team in August 2014. During the Euro 2016 qualifying match, in which England battled Switzerland, Rooney scored his 50th international goal, breaking the record for most career goals scored for the English team. It was also his 300th personal career goal. Rooney saw his 116th appearance for England in a match against Slovakia in the 2018 FIFA World qualifier, making him the nation’s most capped player of all time.

In his personal life, Rooney married Coleen Mc Loughli, whom he had known since secondary school on 12th June 2008. The couples have three sons, Kai Wayne, born on 2nd November 2009, Klay Anthony, born on 21st May 2013 and Kit Joseph, born on 24th January 2016.
