George Wyle (born Bernard Weissman; in New York City on March 22, 1916) was an American orchestra conductor and composer best remembered for writing the theme music for the 1960s television show Gilligan's Island. Jerry Lewis, Flip Wilson, and Jimmy Durante had all worked with Wyle on various shows. Wyle's most well-known affiliation was with Andy Williams. He served as the music director for Andy Williams and works with Eddie Pola. He is credited with the creation of the optimistic Christmas title song It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
Wyle was the musical director and arranger for shows like John Denver and The Muppets: A Christmas Together in the early 1970s and The Flip Wilson Show..From 1979 to 2003, he was a member of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers (ASMAC) Board of Directors.
To express stories through his art, Wyle composed a sea rhythm (Schwartz's original plan was for an island calypso), fine-tuned the lyrics, and the outcome was pure television magic. Even if Wyle isn't a big name, the new generation of sitcom lovers continues to recall his iconic creations by heart. Wyle died on May 1, 2003, at the age of 87, from leukemia.
