Joseph Hill Joss Whedon was born on 23 June 1964 in
City in New York, USA. He is the son of Tom Whedon, who is a television screenwriter, and Lee Stearns, who is a history teacher by profession. He has four brothers Jed Whedon, Zack Whedon, Samuel Whedon, and Matthew Whedon. Jed and Zack are also screenwriters..
Joseph got married to Kai Cole in 1991. She is a film producer. They are the parents of Squire Cole and Arden Cole.
Whedon did his schooling from the Riverdale Country School, New York. He did his high school from the Winchester College, which is a boarding school in England. Joss pursued his further studies from the Wesleyan University, Middletown Connecticut and graduated in 1987. He was the student of a well-known historian and a cultural critic, Richard Slotkin.
Joss started working as a screenwriter in the year 1989. He worked as a member of the staff writers of the TV sitcoms ‘Parenthood’ and ‘Roseanne’. He is also the writer of the films ‘Waterworld’,’ The Getaway, ‘Speed’, ‘X-Men’, and ‘Twister’, but unfortunately did not receive any credits for his writings. Other than these movies, he is given the credit for writing and co-writing the movie scripts of ‘Alien: Resurrection’, ‘Toy Story’, ‘Titan A.E.’, and ‘Atlantis: The Lost Empire’.
His first TV series was ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. This was a great success and helped him in getting the chance to write his second TV show, ‘
’ in the year 1999.
In the post-2000 period, Joss wrote a show named ‘Firefly’, which was set in the year 2517. This futuristic fiction film was about the time when human beings enter a new star system and the adventures they experience. This show just had one season, in which there were fourteen episodes. He also wrote the screenplays of ‘Serenity’, two episodes of ‘The Office’, full series of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, ‘
’, ‘Sugarshock!’, and ‘Dollhouse’.
Whedon also wrote the screenplay of the 2010 superhit film, ‘
’. This movie secured the fourth position on the list of the highest-grossing films in the last five decades in the North American box office.
His movies are known for their strong female characters. The female characters are shown to be powerful and strong rather than weak and fragile.
Joss was nominated for the Academy Award under the category of the Best Original Screenplay for the movie, ‘Toy Story’. He is the recipient of three Eisner Awards for the movies ‘Astonishing X-Men’, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer season Eight’ and ‘Sugarshock!’. He has won the Bradbury Award 2009 under the category of the Outstanding Dramatic Presentation. He was also nominated twice for the Saturn Award for the movies ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ and ‘The Avengers’ (won).
