His father was a taxi driver in New York City. He is the husband of Denise Madelyn Horn, who is also his partner in screenwriting. The couple got married in the year 1974 and has six children. Three of them are triplets.
He completed his education from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in the year 1972. He came to Hollywood in 1972, but did his first project as a screenwriter only after five years in 1977. Mandel debuted on the American television as a screen-writer, in the year 1977. He wrote the screenplay of the show, Busting Loose. The show was based on the life of Lenny Markowitz (played by Adam) and his attempt of moving out of his overprotective parent’s house and renting an apartment. The story revolves around his life after moving out and meeting news friends. The show had two seasons. There were thirteen episodes in the first season and eight in the second. This show wasn’t a huge success.
His second show was an ABC sitcom, Laverne & Shirley, in 1977-1982. The show had eight seasons in total and had a good viewer response. In the year 1982, Marc forayed into the American film industry and wrote the script of the movie, Night Shift. This was a comedy film by Ron Howard. In 1984, he wrote the screenplay of the movie ‘Splash’. The movie got nominated for the Academy Award in the Best Screenplay category. The movie made huge box office collections. In 1992, he wrote the screenplay of the movie A League of Their Own, which also inspired a game show of the same name. Babaloo is the recipient of the National Society of Film Critics Award under the category Best Screenplay. He has also been nominated for an Oscar Award for the Best Original Screenplay and also the Writers Guild-American Award under the category Best Original Screenplay. Mandel has also acted in two movies, Mr. Saturday Night (1992) and the Splash (1984).
