Denise Di Novi is a film producer/director of U.S.A (United States of America). She belonged to a South California beach town. Novi (Italian) is the daughter of Patricia Di Novi and Gene Di Novi. His father Gene Di Novi was a famous Jazz Musician. She is married to Christopher Taylor and has two sons named Mac and Nicholas. Her husband Christopher is a cinematographer. Novi said that her children bring out the best in her. From the past two decades, she has produced numerous Hollywood films. She also owns Di Novi Pictures, a production company. Before entering the film industry, she worked part-time as a waitress in the cottage of Bartley’s Burger. She has studied Communications at Simmons College, Boston. Afterward, she also got a degree in Journalism. She believes that whatever she is today is because she attended this college. She said she learned that you should not be afraid to listen to your inner voice and follow your heart. Her aim was to be a journalist after her graduation as she loved stories. In the late 1960s, Denise and her family moved to Toronto where she lost her mother to cancer. In Toronto, she began her career as a copy editor of the weekly newspaper National Observer and then became a staff writer for Canada AM. After that, she joined as a television reporter for City TV News covering the entertainment industry.
Soon a producer presented her with a job offer of film publicist. She joined as Development Executive. Her work was to read, edit and evaluate/analyze a script for the producers. When she started climbing the ladder in a production company, she was often the only woman in the area and was afraid to speak up. Slowly and slowly, with experience, she gained confidence. In her twenties, she decided to be a movie producer. She worked as an associate producer in the films Going Berserk in 1983 and Videodrome (as Creative Consultant) in the same year. Before that, she was a principal in Film Plan- Production Company of Montreal. After that, she also served as Executive Vice President of new World Pictures production. She started looking for such a script which with being commercial was also original and inspiring for individual production. At that moment, she found Heathers.
Heathers was her first production in the year 1988. This movie got Independent Spirit Award in 1900 for Best First Feature. The next film was Edward Scissorhands in 1990. It was a horror film based on black comedy. In the year 1992, she staged her first studio franchised movie- Batman Returns. Her next production The Nightmare Before Christmas was also with Burton in 1993. Tim Burton was again the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and was the business partner of Denise. Tim Burton and Denise were partners till 1996 and co-produced a total of five films. The rest of the two were Ed Wood (1994) and James and the Giant Peach (1996). Novi also got nominated with Tim Burton for producing in Individual Achievement Award for the film James and the Giant Peach. For a time span of four years, she held the position of executive producer of a CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) Television Network’s police drama named The District. Denise was also the executive producer of the following- The ‘70s (in 2000), Jo (2002), Hotel in 2003, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at the Christmastime (2003) and Sudbury in 2004. Denise Di Novi also starred in ‘HBO First Look’ and ‘Made in Hollywood’ TV series which featured celebrity interviews in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
