Isabel Sanford

Isabel Sanford was a very famous comedian and an American television as well as a film actress. Isabel was the only child that survived among the seven children that Josephine had and was very sturdy and healthy as compared to all the others who died soon after their birth. It is from the very start of her life that she wanted to become an actress and had a passion for joining the industry. Her mother, however, was not very supportive of Isabel’s decision because she considered this field of work to be a road that only led to degradation and nothing more.

Isabel was fervent in her passion and decided to disobey her mother and go ahead with her plan of trying her luck at acting. She joined Harlem’s American Negro Theater. Isabel thought of making it big in the acting world, and she made a debut at the Broadway Theater with The Amen Corner, and this was in the year 1965. Soon after, she made her first appearance in the arena of films with a movie named ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ which came out in the year 1967. However, it was only after the weekly serial named Jefferson that she gained widespread fame. This serial became a super hit among the audiences, and Isabel was highly appreciated not only by the people but by the critics. She went on to win an award for Outstanding Lead Actress in Comedy role. This show ran for eleven seasons and had a huge viewership. She also won a Primetime Emmy Award, and she progressed and became the second black American to have won the award. Isabel married William Richmond in the year 1945 and had two sons and a daughter with him.

However, after a few years of their tumultuous marriage, they parted ways. She had to undergo a surgery that dealt with her carotid artery. It was after this surgery that she saw a constant decline in her health. She breathed her last on 9th of July in the year 2004. She had revealed a lot about herself in an autobiography that she was writing and remained unfinished and unpublished. She also indulged in a lot of charity but never wished to be thanked for it in public.
