Ida Lupino was an Anglo-American director, producer, singer, and actress. She was born on 4 February 1918 in Herne Hill in London. Her film career lasted about forty-eight years. She had appeared in about sixty films and also directed seven films. She became a citizen of United States in 1948 and lived there during most of her career. She also had co-written and co-produced some of her films. She had written five other movies and four television episodes.
Ida had served as a Lieutenant in a woman ambulance and defense corps during the Second World War. For a short time during her career, she also composed music and also worked in radio for some time. At a young age of seven, she wrote and appeared in a play called Mademoiselle for the school production. She attended Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Ida's first film was 'The Love Race' in 1931, which was a comedy film. The next year she made an appearance in another film called 'Her First Affair'. Later, she moved to Hollywood to play a lead role in 'Alice in Wonderland' that was released in 1933. She appeared in a movie called 'Search for Beauty' in 1934, which appeared in an International film for selection of most attractive males and females in the English speaking countries. In 1939, she starred in the film called 'The Light That failed'. Associate producer at Warner bros was impressed by her performance in this movie and hired her for role in 'They Dribe by Night'. In 1943, she appeared in 'The Hard Way' and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for the Best Actress. She played a comedic lead role in 'Pillow to Post' in 1945. She appeared in 'Road House' in 1948. In 1951, she appeared in another film called 'On Dangerous Ground'.
She got a chance to direct a film called 'Not Wanted' because the original director suffered a heart attack, but she did not take the directorial credits. In 1949, she directed the film called 'Never Fear'. Her movies address the brutal repercussions of sexuality, dependence, and independence. She appeared in nineteen episode of 'Four star Playhouse'. She acted in several movies and also on television.
Lupino was married and divorced three times. She had a daughter from her third marriage. She died from a stroke while she was undergoing treatment from colon cancer on 3 August 1995. At that time, she was 77 years of age.
