Sharlto Copley

Sharlto Copley was born on 27th November 1973, in Pretoria, South Africa. He had been fathered by a university producer, Dr. Bruce Copley, and his mother was a healer in Cape Town. He achieved his education from the St. Andrews Preparatory School, in Grahamstown and also from Redhill School, in Morningside, Johannesburg. He has two siblings, Donovan, who is part of the band Hot water in Cape Town, and Marisa, his sister who is skilled at dancing and costume designing. At the age of 22, Copley offered a 16-year-old director, Neill Blomkamp, to direct movies under the name of his production company. Later Copley was offered the lead role in District 9, directed by Blomkamp and Peter Jackson.He played the role of Wikus van der Merwe in the movie.

This role helped him to bag the Favourite Hero Award in 2009, at the Imagine Games Network Summer Movie Awards. Sharlto has been the head of the production and has scripted and directed several short films that have been a part of the Cannes Film Festival. His film District 9, was one of the Oscar nominations in the category of Science Fiction movies. He has also played the lead character of a superhero in a TV series Powers, in 2015. It has been reported that they had a private wedding with selected guests, in Copley’s native land, Cape Town, South Africa.
