Nikolaj Lie Kaas

Nicolaj Lie Kaas (pronounced ‘Nekolai Lee Kos’) was born on May 22, 1973, in Rodovre, Denmark to ‘Preben Kaas’ and ‘Anne Marie Lie’. ‘Preben Kaas’ was a famous Danish actor and comedian whereas ‘Anne Marie Lie’ was an actress/writer. As both his parents were actors, Nicolaj also began his acting career when he was a mere seventeen years old. His first film was “The Boys from St. Petri” (1991) in which his role was highly praised. In 1998, Nicolaj graduated from National Theater School in 1998. He also did ‘The Idiots’ in the same year which is considered the best movie he has been a part of. After ‘The Idiots,’ he played a significant role in ‘In China They Eat Dogs’ (1999) and ‘Flickering Lights’ (2000). He did ‘Truly Human’ in 2001 for which he received Robert Award for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role.’ He started dating ‘Anne Langkilde’ in 2003 and married her in 2008.

They have two daughters, ‘Gerda Kaas’ (born 2006) and ‘Esther Kaas’ (born 2010). In 2009, he played the role of ‘The Assassin’ in ‘Angel and Demons’ (2009). This film helped Nicolaj gain international recognition in countries like U.S.A., U.K., Germany, Russia, Spain, and other non-Danish speaking countries. In 2011, he played the main role in ‘Funny Man’ in which his character of ‘Dirch Passer’ was regarded as the best performance of his career. He also won Robert Award for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ for his role in the film. He also won ‘The Lauritzen Award’ in 2012 for this role. Some of the best movies he has been part of are ‘In China They Eat Dogs II: Part 2 (Old Men In New Cars)’(2002), ‘Open Hearts’ (2002), ‘The Green Butchers’ (2003), ‘Brothers’(2004), ‘Adam’s Apples’ (2005), ‘The Whistleblower’ (2010), ‘The Keeper of Lost Causes’(2013), and ‘A Conspiracy of Faith’(2016).

Nicolaj Lie Kaas is the only actor to bag three ‘Bodil Awards’ (Danish equivalent of Bafta Awards) before turning thirty years old. In 2012, he played the character of ‘Borch’- the sidekick of Sarah Lund in ‘The Killing: Season III.’ This was the first time he played the lead role in a television series. The popularity of the TV Series in U.K. with 1.2 million tuning into watching the TV series made him really famous in the region. Nicolaj Lie Kaas standing at 6 feet 2 inches (187 cm) tall is often regarded as a sex symbol. But he brushes off such titles claiming that he has a wife and two daughters now and is too old to be considered a sex symbol.
