His career started when he made his first debut role for a film named Against all Hope in 1982. After one year, i.e. 1983, Madsen was featured in studio picture War Game. That same year, he appeared in ''Special Bulletin''. And then in 1984, he was aired in the episode of ''Heat''. After his success in these films, he moved to LA and kept himself featuring in movies. In the same year 1984, he appeared for ''Kill Me Again''. In 1991 he featured in ''Reservoir Dogs'' which got a big hit. He got attention from fans and critics from this movie. Michael kept on working and also kept getting featured. In the mid-1990's, Madsen did films, but the ones which were on a lower budget.

These were the tough years for Madsen. Finally, in the year 2003, he featured in 44 Minutes: The North Hollywood shootout, which holds good reviews up till now. In 2006, he appeared in Scary Movie 4. In the early 1990's Michael started Writing in his free time while working on movie sets and while traveling. In 2005, the 13 hands publication collected all of Michael's Poetry and released ''The Complete Poetic Works of Michael Madsen, Vol I: 1995–2005''. He built his career in the writing world and released his first book in 1995 ''Beer, Blood and Ashes '', Then in the same year he released ''Eat the Worm'', and ''Burning in Paradise'' in 1998. ''A Blessing of the Hounds'' in 2002, ''46 Down: A Book of Dreams'' and ''Other Ramblings'' in 2004 and When Pets Kill in 2005.

In 2008, Madsen got invited in Norway for the translation and release of Burning in Paradise. In November 2010, he was the guest of honor for his poetry. In September 2009, American Badass, was released. His latest book, Expecting Rain came to the market in October 2013. Not only in the writing world, but Madsen is also a good photographer. In 2006, he released his first book of photography named ''Signs of Life'', produced by 13 Hands Publications.

Madsen has won several awards, including Firecracker Award for "Burning in Paradise" (1998). In 2006, Red Hen Press awarded Madsen with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his Poetic Works. On September 20, 2007, Madsen won "Best Actor" award at the 23rd Annual Boston Film Festival for Strength and Honour. Also, Madsen won "Best Supporting Actor" at the IFS Film Festival in Beverly Hills in March 2013. Michael Madsen is an excellent actor; not only in acting has he proved himself, he is good at other things as well. He is truly incredible.
